Beth Mantel is a Partner, Solicitor and Team Leader of the Northwest Complex Crime Department. Beth was the founding member in the Manchester office in 2021 which now has a strong following of clients across the Northwest area.

Beth’s practice is based in the Crown Court and she deals almost exclusively in Complex Crime and is regularly instructed in multi-handed conspiracies involving Drugs, Robbery, Murder and Serious Violence. Most recently Beth has accomplished a series of acquittals involving firearms.

Beth has experience dealing with complex confiscation proceedings where she has successfully defended hidden asset applications, she understands that the ancillary matters can have more severe consequences than the original prosecution.

Beth’s key quality is making clients feel comfortable but at the same time being able to analyse large quantities of material including cell site data, encrochat messages and sequence of events charts to quickly establish what the key issues are that each client must overcome to secure a good result. Given her dynamic expertise and ability, she regularly represents clients nationwide.

FRAUD and MONEY LAUNDERING SOLICITORS

R v W – Beth defended the lead defendant in a £5million conspiracy to defraud involving international elements.
R v J – Beth defended an allegation of money laundering after the defendant was charged with owning an escort agency and the crown suggested the money from this was therefore the proceeds of crime. This defendant was acquitted.
R v C – Beth was successful in arguing there was ‘no case to answer’ on a multi-million-pound mortgage fraud.

DRUGS Solicitors

R v M & Others – This defendant was alleged to be the head of a cocaine criminal organisation; Beth defended this client tirelessly in a trial that lasted almost 5 months with over 150,000 pages of call data records.
R v H & Others – Beth defended a defendant in a large-scale drug conspiracy involving class A drugs that spanned between Liverpool, Manchester and Preston. This was a county lines drug operation that involved multiple kilos of class A drugs. Beth’s client received the lowest custodial sentence out of a multi handed conspiracy.
R v H – This defendant faced allegations of drug importation, money laundering and firearms allegations. This case was won by evidencing key disclosure failures by the CPS.
R v M & Others – This case was a large-scale cannabis conspiracy whereby three factories recovered £1.2 million of cannabis plants. Beth’s client was charged as a leading role within the conspiracy. Beth successfully agreed a deal whereby he pleaded to an alternative charge with an acceptable basis of plea, he received a suspended sentence despite being on licence for previous offences.

R v PB & Others 2023 – Beth represented a defendant who faced prosecution in Liverpool Crown Court after the Encrochat hack of being involved in the supply of over Two Thousand kilos of class A drugs. Beth negotiated his role and the quantity down significantly which resulted in a sentence below 20 years.

R v RM & Others 2024 – Proceedings before Leeds Crown Court whereby the defendant was accused of being head of an OCG supplying class A drugs in Yorkshire.

R v SM & Others 2019 – This defendant was alleged to be the head of a cocaine criminal organisation; Beth defended this client tirelessly in a trial that lasted almost 5 months with over 150,000 pages of call data records.

FIREARMS Solicitors

R v K – This defendant faced allegations of conspiracy to possess a firearm with Intent to Endanger Life following an incident where five shots were fired into a house. This case was successfully defended to an alternative charge whereby the sentence received was below 5 years, despite the defendant having already served a life sentence.
R v E – This defendant was arrested following a firearm and ammunition being recovered in his home address. Following a difficult trial this defendant was acquitted.  R v AL & Others 2023 – Beth secured an acquittal for a defendant charged with firearm offences at Bolton Crown Court. This followed a 6 week trial.

R v JB & Others 2024 – Beth successfully defended a defendant charged with Possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life at Manchester Crown Court. After instructing a specialist DNA expert and making legal arguments the case was dropped against this defendant.

R v AJ & Others 2021 – Beth successfully defended a client who was charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life to possession to cause fear of violence. The circumstances were whereby a house was targeted in Bolton and shots fired into a house which had many people inside.

R v AK 2021– This defendant faced allegations of conspiracy to possess a firearm with Intent to Endanger Life at Bolton Crown Court following an incident where five shots were fired into a house. This case was successfully defended to an alternative charge whereby the sentence received was below 5 years, despite the defendant having already served a life sentence.

SERIOUS VIOLENCE Solicitors

R v D & Others – Beth defended a case involving robbery and kidnap. This case resulted in key parts of the evidence being deemed inadmissible following complicated legal arguments.
R v G & Others – This defendant faced allegations of kidnap and torture, he was acquitted following a successful half time application.
R v W & Others – Beth defended a client for perverting the course of justice linked to a gangland shooting in Manchester, this case was prosecuted following a three year investigation. This case was defended by challenging inadmissible evidence.
R v S – Beth secured an acquittal to attempt murder in this case, the client was found guilty of dangerous driving and received a very small sentence.

R v KG & Others 2024 – Beth defended a multi defendant conspiracy to commit s18 assault, whereby the defendant who was a youth was charged as part of a near fatal shooting. The defendant pleaded guilty to a violent disorder and received a suspended sentence.

R v SM 2023 – Beth defended this defendant in Derby Crown Court following being charged with aggravated burglary whereby the defendant was said to have entered a home address and attacked the residents over a drug debt. Following numerous requests for disclosure the defendant eventually pleaded to S20 and theft which resulted in short sentence, whereas he was facing potential life imprisonment.

R v MD & Others 2020– Beth defended a case in Sheffield Crown Court involving robbery and kidnap. This case resulted in key parts of the evidence being deemed inadmissible following complicated legal arguments.

R v NG & Others 2019 – This defendant faced allegations in Manchester Crown Court of kidnap and torture, he was acquitted following a successful half time application.

R v DW & Others 2020 – Beth defended a client for perverting the course of justice linked to a gangland shooting in Manchester, this case was prosecuted following a three year investigation. This case was defended by challenging inadmissible evidence.

R v AE 2022 – Beth secured an acquittal to attempt murder in this case, the client was found guilty of dangerous driving and received a very small sentence.

MURDER Solicitors

R v S – Beth defended a client for Murder, following a successful application to dismiss this client was convicted of a violent disorder whereby he received a non-custodial sentence.
R v K – Beth was successful in overturning a conviction for murder in the court of appeal then went on to represent the defendant in his subsequent re-trial. The murder involved a shooting in Greater Manchester.
R v R – Beth successfully defended an allegation of murder whereby following a long-standing feud, a fight broke, and someone was killed. This defendant was found guilty of manslaughter.
R v I – Beth successfully defended an allegation of murder whereby the boyfriend of my client was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her home. The defendant was found guilty of manslaughter and received 4 years imprisonment.

R v NW 2024 – Beth defended an individual charged with Murder at Lincoln Crown Court who was prosecuted after the victim was repeatedly stabbed.

R v SM 2023 – Beth defended an individual charged with Murder at Stafford Crown Court after a vehicle collided with the victim.

R v BG & Others 2022 – Beth defended a youth charged with Murder in a multi-handed conspiracy. The trial lasted for 6 weeks after the victim was stabbed fatally and the crowns case was that this was arranged via snapchat.

R v RK 2017 – Beth was successful in overturning a conviction for murder in the court of appeal then went on to represent the defendant in his subsequent re-trial. The murder involved a shooting in Greater Manchester.

R v MI 2019 – Beth successfully defended an allegation of murder whereby the boyfriend of my client was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her home. The defendant was found guilty of manslaughter and received 4 years imprisonment.
