Vacancy for caseworker in our London office

We are looking for an experienced Caseworker who will assist solicitors and advocates in the preparation of cases at the Police Station, Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts.  The main duties are as set out below.

Main duties:

  • To ensure that the firm’s high client care standard is maintained by responding to client calls and enquiries proactively and appropriately;
  • Liaise promptly and professionally with all associated third parties including the Prosecution, Police and Courts; by telephone and in writing
  • Attend clients and witnesses to take instructions, prepare statements and draft other legal documents under supervision;
  • Preparing and submitting applications for Legal Aid
  • Draft correspondence to clients and third parties under supervision;
  • Prepare cases for court hearings;
  • Effectively manage time ensuring tight deadlines are met;
  • Opening all police station files on digital case system and making sure correct letters and client care guides are sent to clients;
  • Chasing outcomes on Police Station, Magistrates Court and Crown Court files;
  • Closing all police station files and ensuring they are prepped correctly for billing;
  • Ensuring all relevant dates and directions are diarised and that appropriate cover has been arranged, ensuring that solicitors and advocates are made aware of court dates;
  • Covering 24hr phone during the office opening hours;
  • Ensuring a representative attends police stations to represent clients as needed;
  • When the new duty rotas are released, ensuring slots are placed in the relevant diaries;
  • Dealing with new enquiries, and arranging funding (either money on account or legal aid) as appropriate;

Key Requirements:

  • Must be Police station accredited or be willing to become accredited;
  • Ideally previous experience working in a criminal defence firm, or demonstrate a strong commitment to criminal defence work and legal aid;
  • Excellent communicator in both written and spoken English;
  • Good understanding of client care requirements;
  • Must be IT literate;
  • Must be proactive in seeking to assist fee earners and apply consistently high attention to detail;
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills;
  • Good team work ethics;
  • Ideally have experience of handling own caseload
  • Confident in utilising own initiative where appropriate

This position is advised on a full time. Salary: £20,000 to £27,000 per annum, dependent on experience. Working hours are 9am- 5pm Monday – Friday with one hour for lunch. If you are interested in this position, please apply via Reed Recruitment:
