The Legal 500 is the leading guide to law firms in the UK. Published annually, the Legal 500 assesses the strengths of law firms, utilising research drawn from client feedback, submissions from law firms and interviews with leading lawyers in private practice.
The results are always eagerly awaited, and this year has been no exception.
We are proud and delighted that both Reeds Solicitors and Reeds Chambers were recognised this year; with our London office, and our South East regional offices moving up a tier in the rankings for a consecutive year.
The Legal 500 had this to say about our crime teams:-
In London “Reeds Solicitors handles a range of crime cases including drugs supply, assault, murder, fraud and money laundering. Abigail Ashford heads the team which is efficient, responsive and knowledgeable. Associate Mark Abbott is a thoughtful and detailed litigant with impressive knowledge of the law and thorough and sensitive client contact.”
Of our offices in the South East, the Legal 500 noted “The ‘outstanding’ team at Reeds Solicitors is highly valued for its ‘dedication to its clients and for having a good eye to clients’ additional needs including mental health issues and other vulnerabilities’. Solicitor-advocate Stuart Matthews and Julian Richards are highly regarded and ‘extremely good at mastering large and complex cases, with good advocacy skills and exceptional client care’… The team has a blend of criminal, prison and family law expertise, assisting both public and privately funded clients. It handles challenging cases concerned with homicides, large-scale drugs offences, sexual crimes and fraud”.
Our offices in the South West received acclaim again this year: “Reeds Solicitors is a growing firm that specialises in criminal defence and prison law, and which recently launched specialist teams dealing with private actions against the police, military, corporate crime and regulatory law. It also deals with sexual offences, violent crimes, drug-related crimes and fraud. The firm is ‘exceptional in its approach to the tough world of criminal legal aid work’. Director and solicitor-advocate Stephen Clifford heads the team, he is supported by solicitor-advocate Andy Lee who provides round-the-clock representation at the police station as well as at the Magistrates Court and Crown Court. Recent cases include defending a client arrested under Operation Scottsdale and charged with conspiracy to keep and manage brothels; the client was given a non-custodial sentence. In another key matter, the practice represented a vulnerable woman charged with assisting an offender linked to murder; she was acquitted of all charges.”
Alistair Grainger, a barrister based in the Oxford branch of our integrated Chambers, was listed as leading Junior in the South East circuit in this year’s Legal 500 UK Bar rankings, calling him “A talented advocate who cross-examines with tact and skill.’”
“Reeds Chambers houses Alistair Grainger, who is instructed for the prosecution and defence in cases of serious sexual offences, homicide and serious violence, among other areas.”
Our family law team in the South East were also recognised: ”
Reeds Solicitors has developed a sophisticated family law practice, having originally been renowned as a criminal defence firm. Firm director Rod Fowler leads the Oxford office family law team and is personally noted for his work representing clients in public and private family law cases, receiving instructions regularly both from private individuals and from child care professionals. The practice also handles divorces and separations, care proceedings matters and financial claims.”
